Dales national park itself.
Tropical World (17 km) - The atmosphere of the
tropics is recreated here as visitors walk among exotic trees.
A waterfall cascades into a rock-pool and other pools contain
terrapins and carp. There are reptiles, insects and more than
30 species of butterfly.
Harewood House & Bird Garden (10 km) - Designed
in 1759 by John Carr, Harewood House is the home of the Queen's
cousin, the Earl of Harewood. His mother, HRH Princess Mary, Princess
Royal lived at Harewood for 35 years and much of her memorabilia
is still displayed.
Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal (14 km) -
Founded by Cistercian monks in 1132, Fountains Abbey is the largest
monastic ruin in Britain. It was acquired by William Aislabie
in 1768, and became the focal point of his landscaped gardens
at Studley. Other interesting features include Fountains Hall.
Newby Hall & Gardens (13 km) - A late 17th-century
house with beautifully restored Robert Adam interiors containing
an important collection of classical sculpture and Gobelin tapestries.
25 acres of award-winning gardens include a miniature railway
and an adventure garden for children.
Brimham Rocks (14 km) - A Victorian guidebook
described the rocks as 'a place wrecked with grim and hideous
forms defying all description and definition'. The rocks have
remained a great attraction, and stand on National Trust open
moorland at a height of 950ft.
